Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
