Everyone Are Invited to Join as the Additional Haim Sisters Bandmate.

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile admirers have also coveted the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos frequently show them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound confidence required a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

Yet the band will forever be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
